TWO schools are celebrating glowing reports for their students’ A-level performances.

The sixth form of John Kyrle High School in Ross-on-Wye were again ranked in the top 10 per cent nationally for results by the ALPS organisation, which collects data from schools across England and Wales.

And Wyedean School in Tutshill said it had also received an “Excellent” grading from the group, following a “Good” Ofsted report earlier this year.

Rob Wallace, John Kyrle head of sixth form, said: “This latest recognition capped a superb year for post-16 at JKHS, after Ofsted confirmed the “Outstanding” grade earlier in 2017.

“The staff and students at JKHS are incredibly proud of the sixth form. High-quality teaching, motivated young people and supportive parents have enabled us to perform at the very highest levels nationally.”

He added that the

results were especially satisfying given the changing A-level landscape, with many courses last year among the new, more-rigorous examinations.

Headteacher Nigel Griffiths added: “JKHS continues to help young people achieve the very best standards and send them on to ambitious futures in higher education, apprenticeships and training.”

Wyedean director of sixth form, Johnathan Lane, said: “At a time of educational uncertainty, especially in the local area, we are delighted to have received such positive news about our A-level results.

“This hasn’t happened by accident. It’s a combination of a highly skilled and knowledgeable subject staff delivering to an ambitious and dedicated student body.”

He said the school’s A-level results over the past three years have been classed ‘Excellent’ by Alps – the second time in a row this has happened.

“The Alps accolade demonstrates the work ethic and diligence of staff and students at Wyedean Sixth Form over the past three years. This arrives on a back of an Ofsted review that rated the school ‘Good’ in February.

“Many students are now studying at Russell Group universities, including Oxford, or embarking upon higher level apprenticeships.

“Crucial to the school’s success has been getting the right students on the right courses, which was praised in the recent Ofsted inspection.

“The school devotes impressive levels of time and resources to

discussing students’ strengths and aspirations before they enrol and guiding them towards the most appropriate courses.

“Wyedean also benefits from having a highly experienced and knowledgeable teaching staff who understand their courses inside out.

“This, combined with a great attitude from the students, has created a recipe for success,” he added.

As well as offering academic rigour, Wyedean Sixth Form says it is also keen to offer an enriching experience.

Trips are run to Auschwitz and the UN, work shadowing is done in the summer term and extra-curricular clubs are run on Wednesday afternoons.

Wyedean is also taking steps to become a ‘World School’ in 2019 by offering the International Baccalaureate Careers Programme.

The oversubscribed school is still accepting applications for September 2018, but places on courses are limited due to high demand.
