FOREST Fitness Centre-based special power lifter Nathan Fisher is in line for the Special Olympics after the Scottish Special Power Lifting Championships.

Over 50 lifters were competing. Already having won a gold medal earlier in the year at the four yearly Special Olympics Nathan was competing to retain his senior Scottish title which he won in 2009.

Lifting at a body weight of just 58.1 kilos in the senior 60 kilo class he put in an excellent personal performance being successful with a top squat of 120 kilos. He then set a personal best in the bench press with a top lift was 90 kilos.

In the dead lift Nathan excelled all expectations with a finishing with a lift of 115 kilos, just missing with what would have been another personal best of 11 and a half kilos. This gave Nathan a personal total of 325 kilos, ensuring him of the gold medal in his weight class.

His coach at the Forest Fitness Centre, Alan Elliott, said: "This was a very important competition for Nathan because several of the selectors for the GB World Special Olympics team were there and Nathan has been nominated for selection.

"We have high hopes that he will be selected to represent his country at the World Special Olympic games in Athens next year and his performance in Scotland will have given a huge boost to his chance of being picked."

Alan will be overseeing Nathan's training and also organising activities to raise the £2,000 needed for Nathan to take part.

"We will be looking for local business sponsors," said Alan.
