A LYDNEY trader has a major headache after 40 old tyres were dumped on her back doorstep.

Tracy Lancaster's Crazy Occasions party shop moved to the former Mills Newsagents building on Monday.

But when she started to prepare the shop for opening she found the abandoned tyres in the back yard.

Tracy said: "It has been used as a dumping ground for a long time and kids had been wheeling the tyres around in the car park.

"I was scared that one of them might go under a car or cause some sort of hazard, because it is right next to the youth café.

"I phoned the council about four times and each time I was told they would look into getting someone out.

"Eventually they told me it was my responsibility to get rid of them because they were dumped on private property, but it wasn't me that dumped them.

"I don't mind getting rid of them, but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to take them. You can't take them to the tip and I was given no suggestions about what to do next."

Dale Roberts of Lydney's Exhausts, Tyres and Batteries has now agreed to take the tyres from Tracy and have them collected by the company's contractor.

He said: "People have come to us two or three times before over the last 12 months.

"The council won't take them, which I think is outrageous. I can't believe people just dump them though."

Forest council spokesman Tony Wisdom said: "We are not allowed by law to pick dumped tyres up off private land.

"If tyres are fly-tipped on public land we can get rid of it at public expense, but we cannot legally do it with tyres on private land.

"We are however aware that disposal of fly-tipped tyres can be a problem for people and we are looking at it at the moment."

He suggests people could contact Bendalls of Lydney on 01594 844243 for scrap collection.
