AFTER what organisers described as "an exciting and very noisy afternoon" Soudley youngsters proved to be in splashing form to win Group A of the Primary School Swimming Gala at Heywood Leisure Centre.

"Many of the races were won and lost 'on the touch' and not only was a high level of skill displayed but also tremendous team spirit and determination," said a spokesman.

A total of 120 children took part and afterwards Alison Tingle, the leisure centre's swimming coordinator, presented the trophies given by local estate agent Kevin J Toombs.

Soudley's win came after they had maintained a narrow lead throughout the competition. The Group B winners were Ruardean Woodside, who just managed to hold off Westbury in a closely fought contest to retain the trophy they won last year.

Group C winners were Longhope, who finally defeated last year's champions, Walmore Hill, by just one point.

"Congratulations go to all the boys and girls who took part with such enthusiasm," said the spokesman, who also thanked teachers, parents and leisure centre staff for the time and effort they had put into making the event a success.
