WORKERS carrying out the creation of a new Kavern bar from old cellars and outbuildings at the Angel Hotel in Coleford have become aware of a spooky overseer – the pub's ghost 'Fred'.
Cleaning materials in the town centre landmark have mysteriously vanished and strange markings have appeared on the exposed beam above a fireplace in the its bar.
In the past the Angel has experienced more dramatic goings on – drawers moving in and out on their own, and shadowy figures walking through walls, said landlord Barry Stoakes.
"We've also had the lights not working today – and the electrics all check out," said Barry on the eve of the Kavern bar's opening this week.
"I wouldn't be surprised. It could be him. There's a lot of funny stuff going on."
'Fred' is reputed to be the ghost of a duelling Forester killed in the courtyard around 100 years ago.
Barry and Christine Stoakes are putting the finishing touches to the Kavern bar and family beer garden, in which they have invested £250,000.
Built into converted cellars and storerooms, the Kavern has a cosy snug and a larger bar, both with exposed beams and original stonework, while the new garden outside features palm trees and a restored wall dating back to 1640.
The new attractions are opening on Friday evening with a party and live band.
