MEMBERS of Cinderford's Junior Lifeguard Club – only formed last October – have been making a splash in the world of swimming.
The nine to 16 year-olds have already passed Lifesaving 1, 2 and 3 awards, rescue breathing award and Junior Life Support award.
Club leader Alison Tingle said the awards involved being able to recognise when people were in danger and carry out rescues using ropes or poles from the poolside.
"We also stage incidents when members have to swim out to a casualty and bring them to safety. Everyone has worked very hard but we have a lot of fun too. They are learning practical skills which could help to save a life," said Alison.
The club has ten regular members who are now going on to more advanced skills but Alison is keen to attract new members to the Friday afternoon sessions at the Leisure Centre.
"New members need to be confident in the water and able to swim 25 metres each of front crawl, breaststroke and backstroke," said Alison.
•The club meets at the Heywood school site every Friday between 4.14 and 5.15pm. More information is available from the Leisure Centre (dean 824008).
