ON a number of occasions – too many in my opinion – it would appear the drivers of Lydney do not know the Highway Code.

While travelling through Lydney, towards Highfield Hill/Blakeney, I have indicated my intention to turn off right into Hams Road or Naas Lane. There have been vehicles waiting in Albert Street who decide to pull across the main road and access Hams Road/Naas Lane or to turn into Highfield Hill/Newerne Street, straight in front of me and others turning vehicles, giving rise to a collision situation.

When turning off a main highway one would not expect to have to brake hard to avoid colliding with a vehicle which should still be waiting until the junction is clear to access.

This could also cause any driver following to collide with the rear of the turning vehicle as they too would not expect a vehicle to take such a risk.

This has also happened with through traffic coming down Highfield Hill. Vehicles do not respect the stop sign or white lines at the junction of Albert Street and the main through road and assume they have right of way to cut across through traffic.

This scenario was played out on Monday last week. As I had just accessed Hams Road from the main road, a white van decided to pull straight across my path from the Naas Lane junction. This is not only a very dangerous practice, but I would judge it to be in contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

There have been a number of excuses used in similar situations, one being "I didn't see you" (shouldn't be on the road then) but when you consider my vehicle is a red 4x4, I am sure it is plenty big and bright enough to be seen.

There are several difficult if not totally dangerous junctions in Lydney. The other main one is Bream Road into High Street. Since the building of Tesco, the situation has become more difficult and traffic lights should be in operation.
