WITH the approach road to Beechenhurst Lodge frozen to a glassy rink, Sunday's advertised Canicross event was called off – but that did not stop hardy souls who turned up to enjoy a fun run starting at nearby Speech House.
"It would have been suicidal to run on the frosty ground, so instead we decided to have a fun run instead, taking out the competitive element," said organiser Nicki Hutchinson.
"In the event we had about 10 turn up plus dogs and we set off under the stained glass window on the Sculpture Trail, taking it easy. Everybody had a great time and the dogs really enjoyed it.
"One man came along with four Black Labradors, we had a Mamaluke from Cinderford and even a King Charles Spaniel – all sorts!"
Nicki started the whole business of Canicross running in the Forest some years ago and it has become a growing movement with its own website – http://www.canicross.org.uk">www.canicross.org.uk – and several growing groups across the country.
"I am looking to start group to run a regular series of races in the Forest after several people expressed an interest," says Nicki, who can be called on 07799 646 508.
"It's all about getting out with our dogs, meeting people and enjoying ourselves," she says.
Dogs are usually on harnesses which give them freedom of movement and Nicki and the website give advice on how to go about joining in. The next meet is being planned for the third Sunday in January (20th), probably at Beechenhurst.
