LYDNEY'S under 13s football players saw off some of the top teams in England to win the Fleetwood Cup in a national tournament played at Blackpool.

Lydney played four group matches over three days to win through to the final where they met youngsters representing Corinthian Casuals, one of the best known and oldest clubs in the country.

The Casuals had comfortably defeated Lydney in a group match, but a change of tactics and some determined play brought a great win, 3-2. Lydney's hat-trick hero was Alex Weaterton.

The victory was well deserved and the boys celebrated by dumping manager Alan Brown in the muddy centre circle and piling on top of him! "It was really a show of appreciation," Alan told the Review. " The boys conducted themselves really well on and off the field and I know they are grateful to Selwyn and Anne Booth for organising the tour and Steve and Denise Humphries of Forest Pest Control who provided their kit," he said.
