COLEFORD has already lost its annual music festival – and now the transport carnival is under threat too, say the organisers.

This year's Carnival of Transport was an outstanding success but the 2010 event is facing two threats – lack of parking space and a dwindling committee.

"Each year the event has grown in size until this year when, with the combination of record entries and good weather we reached near bursting point," said a spokesman.

"With the loss of one and possibly two of the town's public car parks there is now even less parking space available. It has become increasingly difficult to find sufficient parking spaces for the many disabled pass holders who visit the event.

"However these are logistical problems born from success which the committee is working hard to try to overcome."

A bigger threat, he said, was the growing amount of work involved in organising the event.

"This falls on a very small committee. We lost a couple of members last year and two more have stood down this year. We have yet to replace any of them," said the spokesman.

"A couple of our members have been on the committee since the event's inception and the 2010 event will be the thirteenth. We are all volunteers with the majority of us working people with 'proper jobs.'

"The infrastructure and planning processes are all in place, no one would be working alone. We just need a few more people to share some of the workload.

"We start our meetings in September and meet locally once a month for about two hours on a Tuesday evening up to the New Year, then twice a month on the run up to the event.

"This is also a plea to some of the local traders who obviously benefit greatly from the day; a few of you joining us would make all the difference."
