WHILE most local games fell victim to the snow and ice last weekend, the all-weather pitch at Caldicot Leisure Centre lived up to its name.
Seven teams took part in a five-a-side round robin charity tournament to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of soccer referee Phillip Blurton, who died from a heart attack in the middle of a match in Suffolk.
The competition was organised by Mr Blurton's widow Jan and children Sian, Sarah and David.
The snow started coming down as the tournament got underway and soon it was impossible to see the pitch lines.
Sarah said: "Dad is probably looking down at this and laughing."
Local teams joined friends from as far away as Suffolk and Kent for the event in aid of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
Among those taking part were Mr Blurton's grandchildren Megan and Luke Hart and friends from Caldicot Comprehensive School.
Sarah said: "Dad made a monthly donation to the NSPCC and so we decided to donate the money to that."
As well as the match there was also an evening event at Caldicot Male Voice Choir Hall, which included an auction, which raised more than £500.
The lots included signed photographs from the Manchester United team and rock group the Stereophonics and a photo and bag from Ipswich Town – some of Mr Blurton's ashes were spread over the club's Portman Road ground.
It is hoped the event will raise more than £1,500 for the charity.
