ORGANISERS of the annual Stone Firm’s Challenge Cup at Cannop Ponds were pleasantly surprised by the ’one hell of a turnout’ at its recent event.
There were fears the ongoing road closure in New Road, between Parkend and Cannop, would affect the number of entries but water bailiff officer for Yorkley Angling Club, Jan Norris says at least 36 people turned up.
She said: "It was one hell of a turnout. The Stone Firm’s Challenge Cup always attracts a good turnout of local fishermen but this year we were concerned the road closure would deter people.
"We have seen the number of licences purchased for the pond decline sharply so naturally thought this year’s fishing contest would also suffer.
"Instead we had a great day with Chris Morgan of Yorkley and District Angling Club coming first with 25lbs 11oz, Nick Oakley came second with 9lbs 3oz and Paul Blake, who is the manager at the stone works, came third with 6lb 1oz.
"The prize monies and trophies were given by the stone works with £200 (first place), £110 (second) and £90 (third).
"On behalf of Yorkley and District Angling Club, we thank the stone works for continuing to support us and providing sponsorship for the last nine years."
