THERE was a sizeable turn out from local runners at the Magor 10k road race, organised by Chepstow Harriers.

Forest of Dean AC’s men secured two top-10 finishes as they won the team prize, while the host club’s Nikki Morgan was second fastest woman and fastest over 50 female in 39.42, one of six class wins for the region’s clubs.

Morgan was just 10 seconds behind fastest woman Elizabeth Dimond of Lliswerry in the 300-strong field, as Harriers’ women’s team, including Kim Carwardine, Brenda Avery and Barbara Maddison, came second to Caerphilly Runners.

FoDAC’s Cory Sherwin took sixth place overall in a PB 35mins 47secs, with Andy Raynor close behind in eighth in 36.10.

And combined with Greg Nash in 39.37, who was second in the men’s over 45 class, and Richard Cronin in 39.44, the team took home the men’s prize by 28 points from Chippenham Harriers, with Caerphilly Runners third, Caldicot RC fourth and the host club fifth.

Second in his men’s over 35 class was Chepstow Harrier Robert Pritchard in 12th overall in 36.50.

And former Eggheads TV quiz star CJ de Mooi showed a quick turn of speed in Caldicot RC colours to take the over 45 men’s title in 17th overall in 38.18, while Chepstow Harriers’ Stephen Owen raced to the over 65 crown in 42.26.

FoDAC’s Margaret Powles stormed to the women’s 60+ title in 51.38, while Harriers’ Brenda Avery matched her clubmate Owen to win the women’s 65+ class in 52.47, and fellow Harrier Sydney Wheeler took the men’s over 70 title in 1.15.52.

Second in their class were FoDAC’s Walter Leach (men’s over 55, 40.07), clubmate Michael Strange (men’s over 65, 44.14) and Spirit of Monmouth’s Stephen McMenemy (men’s over 60, 48.37).

Other notable results were FoDAC’s Richard Pegler, who was fourth in the men’s over 45 class in 40.25, clubmate Andrew Kaye, third in the men’s over 55 category in 41.18, Harriers’ Robert Hook, fourth in over 55s in 43.33, and fellow Chepstow runner Barbara Maddison, fourth in women’s over 55s in 53.22.

Spirit of Monmouth duo Nerys Chaplin (46.59) and Alison McMenemy (1.05.35) were also fourth in class, in the women’s over 35 and over 60 categories respectively.

Overall winner on race day was Simon Nott of Calne AC in 32.16.

In the women’s team event, FoDAC were sixth, while the men’s second string would have placed seventh quickest.

The Magor 10k is a sell out race every year due to its popularity as a fast, flat course and the potential to achieve a personal best over the distance.
