Caldicot continued their 100 per cent start to the new season with a stunning second half display to overwhelm Oakdale 55-24.

Steve Pritchard's men came from behind to score six second half tries and leapfrog their highly-fancied opponents into third place in SWALEC Division Four East.

Centre Sion Lewis and wing Chris Buffrey both ran in hat-tricks as the home side showed a cutting edge that will send a clear message to their fellow promotion chasers.

Coach Steve Pritchard said: "In the end we just run away with it. The forwards won a lot of set-piece ball and the backs used it to great effect.

"We were busting holes all over the place and finishing them off which we haven't always tended to do this season.

"In other games we had created chances but hadn't been clinical but on Saturday the hard work we have put in paid off and turned to gold."

Caldicot enjoyed a dream start to the game when Lewis scored a try straight from kick-off which was converted by Joe Bajjada for the first of 15 points from his boot.

But the home side soon found themselves on the back foot, falling 19-7 behind before Buffrey's first try of the afternoon gave them hope just before half-time.

A converted Liam Neil try straight after the re-start levelled the score and seemed to have pushed the momentum in Caldicot's favour.

But from kick off Oakdale went straight down the other to score a try and restore a five point advantage at 24-19.

However this proved to be the catalyst for the home side to play their best rugby of the season and simply blow the visitors away.

On 56 minutes Tom Bond put his side back on level terms before a Bajjada penalty six minutes later moved them into the lead.

A second converted try from Lewis extended their advantage 10 minutes later and he completed his hat-trick to effectively seal the win on 74 minutes.

There was still time for Buffery to score twice – both converted by Bajjada – to rub salt into the wounds of a tiring Oakdale side who had a man sent off in the second half.

Pritchard said: "It was a really good win as Oakdale have spent some money and recruited some household names from around the valleys. They were a couple of standards up from anyone we have played this year but we were able to lift our game.

"We have got a young squad this year – only two are over 23. They trained hard in pre-season and we are starting to see the benefits."

But despite the excellent start to the season he said the side wouldn't be in any danger of getting carried away.

He said: "In the last few years you knew if you beat certain sides you would be there or thereabouts but it is hard to tell this season.

"The league is a lot stronger and in the next few weeks we have Cilfynydd who have only lost once and New Tredegar who are unbeaten. After those games it will be easier to work out where we stand but it is still very early days."

Caldicot visit second-place Cilfynydd on Saturday.
