Caldicot Town went a long way to banishing any lingering relegation fears with a fifth win in six games.

The side now sit tenth in Welsh League Division Two after a 1-0 win over third-bottom Bettws.

The result leaves them seven points clear of the drop zone with games in hand over a number of the sides below them.

A Luke Harris goal, his fifth since rejoining the club from PILCS, was enough to see off a visiting side who rarely troubled a solid looking Town defence.

In truth, neither side had looked in danger of finding the back of the net during a poor first half with few chances at either end.

But Caldicot were a different team after the break, controlling play and securing the win with a superb strike.

A diagonal ball over the top from striker Mitchell Slape found Harris on the right hand edge of the box and his shot from outside the area was too good for the visiting 'keeper.

The victory continues Town's resurgence under the management of Nathan Cadette and Mark Williams who took over when the club had taken just three points from their opening nine games.

Mark said: "When Nath and me took over the most important thing was to try and boost team morale and there is a really good spirit among the lads now. We brought a few players in and did a lot of work on shape and formation - we were too open before-  and the hard work seems to be paying off."

Although the side's recent run of form is as good as anyone in the league Mark is refusing to get carried away, insisting survival is still their main priority.

He said: "The aim when we took over was always to gain safety. We are now seven points clear of the bottom three and have three games in hand over them so it is looking good. I think looking at previous seasons we need two more wins to be safe. Then we can start looking to really push forward and establish ourselves."

Caldicot's run of form has coincided with the signing of several experienced players and the emergence of some young home-grown talent. This includes centreback pairing James Munday and  Nick Bright, who were singled out for particular praise following a second successive clean sheet.

Next up for in-form Town is a local derby away at sixth-placed Caerleon who also go into the game with confidence after a 5-1 win at Aberbargoed Buds.
