Chepstow will need to beat promotion-chasing Kington this Saturday to avoid relegation after losing 4-2 at home to fellow strugglers Cardiff Athletic II.
The visitors would have been dead and buried with anything less than a victory but they kept their survival hopes alive with a performance that belied their lowly league position.
However, Hannah Williams' team – who are three points adrift from safety – will be guaranteed a place in Division One at the expense of Athletic if they win this weekend as their rivals have already completed all of their league games.
The encounter between the two sides saw Chepstow gain the upper hand early on as Hannah Moore gave them the lead with a superb solo goal. But with a team featuring a number of players from their first team, Cardiff stepped up the tempo and soon found an equaliser.
Chepstow fought back and went close on a number of occasions but it was the visitors who found a crucial second goal. An inch perfect pass through a hole in the home defence sent an Athletic forward on the way and they made no mistake.
The score remained 2-1 to the visitors at half-time and they continued to look the more dangerous of the two sides after the break. They added two well worked goals to take an unassailable 4-1 lead before Anna Mayo showed her goal-scorers' instinct to grab a consolation goal from close range.
Having missed the chance to guarantee Division One hockey for another season it is now all or nothing for Chepstow this Saturday. Their task will be made harder with the fact that their opponents Kington need to win to clinch promotion and beat them 2-1 in the previous meeting between the two clubs this season.
