MOTORCYCLE racer Dan Nelmes is all revved up to lift the championship title in his first full season on the track.

The Lydney biker currently tops the table by over one hundred points after round five of the eight-round series in the North Glos Road Racing Pre-injection 700 class on a Yamaha R6.

He has won eight of 15 starts this season, finishing second in all but one of the remaining races, where he was third. His latest success came in South Wales at the Pembrey Circuit, where Nelmes smashed the circuit record in his class with a 1.02.154 lap in Race 1 on the Sunday.

The 32-year-old went on to take the win finishing 1.2 seconds in front of the next rider to extend his championship lead.

Nelmes was pegged back to second place in Sunday Race 2 by championship rival Dan Jones, who made his way to the front after a poor start on his home track.

Saturday had seen Nelmes qualify second with a 1.03.422 in overcast conditions and he had to settle for second place in the race after a fantastic duel with Jones over 14 laps.

Jones just took the win by a wheel length as they crossed the finish line.

Local riders Lee Meek and Andrew Thorne were also competing in the class with Thorne bagging fourth in the same race, while Meek finished strongly after being held up in the early laps.

Nelmes is looking forward to the next round at Anglesey over the August 10 and 11 weekend, and hopes to increase his championship lead with another decent set of results.

His only slip out of the top two this year was third at Cadwell Park after finding himself on the wrong tyres for the conditions.

He has, nevertheless, been on the podium in every race so far this season.

The penultimate round is at Castle Coombe on August 31 to September 1 and the series wraps up at Oulton Park on the weekend of September 27 to 28.

The current North Glos Road Racing Pre-injection 700 class standings are Daniel Nelmes 336; Daniel Jones 235; Nik Sweet 170; Dean Ratcliff 153; Gary Rodwill 136; and Aaron Staniforth 75.
