Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Reg Davis Cup semi-final
Lydney 2nds 1 Chalford 2
----
A GOAL by Sam Wines with two minutes to play gave Lydney 2nds hope of uncorking a classic cup tie comeback at home to Chalford.
But despite being roared on by a sizeable home crowd, the hosts suffered semi-final heartache as the visitors held on to win 2-1.
Having gone 2-0 down in a frantic last 10 minutes before pulling one back, it proved a nailbiting last few minutes, but all to no avail.
The early season Reg Davis Cup competition saw all 32 Gloucestershire Northern Senior League teams contest the opening round on August 4.
And wins over English Bicknor 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, Stonehouse Town Reserves 4-3 and Charlton Rovers 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, saw Lydney line up in last Wednesday night’s (September 18) semi-final under the Rec floodlights.
Chalford had the best chance of a tight first half, but were denied by Lydney keeper Connor Mullan who tipped the ball over the bar.
After the restart, the Stroud outfit’s keeper spilled the ball under pressure, but Wines saw his chance miss the target.
Lydney pressed for the breakthrough, but against the run of play Chalford struck as Andy Marr latched onto a through ball and smashed it past Mullan to make it 1-0 with just ten minutes to play.
Marr made it 2-0 on 85 minutes and Lydney’s chance seemed to have gone.
But a last-ditch goal by Wines gave the home side some hope, only for the ref to blow before they could find a leveller.
