National League South West Division Three

Lydney 21-10 Old Patesians

TONY Wicks contributed an outstanding 11 points to the Severnsiders’ total as Lydney kept their season going in the right direction.

But the result was not as comfortable as the final score might suggest and things will have to be tightened up for next week’s visit to leaders Barnstaple.

Lydney are now one of three teams on 23 points which put them six points behind the Devon side.

Indiscipline among the visitors gave Lydney scope to show Wicks’ skill with the boot and the home side’s first score came from a line-out set up by a penalty.

Skipper Sam Arnott and Wicks linked to send prop Ryan Bull-Meadows over close to the posts. Wicks added the extra points.

Despite this early promise Lydney went into the break three points in arrears.

Early in the second half Wicks put in a superb touchfinder after full back Eamonn Rees was adjudged to have been tackled in the air with a yellow card following for the visitors’ left wing, Lee Hathaway.

From the line-out Toby Patrick went over to restore Lydney’s lead which Wicks extended with the conversion.

With Hathaway in the bin the visitors were unable to take advantage of a couple of penalty chances after the Lydney scrum buckled in the 22 and eventually Wicks put the result of this Gloucestershire derby beyond doubt with three more penalties.
