IT took an enthralling tie-break to decide the women’s singles title at Lydney Tennis Club’s annual championship finals day.
And the repeat of last year’s final between Cindy Leli and Cath Hutchinson finally saw the latter retain the crown.
The two protagonists were well matched and neither gave an inch, with Cindy taking the first set after a tie-break 7-6.
Cath hit back to win the second set 6-4 which set the scene for a championship tie beak to decide it.
Played exactly like a tie-break, but going to 10 points instead of seven, the spectators watched spellbound to the very end of a high quality contest before Cath secured victory by 10 points to six to finally hold on to her title.
Club members fought the championships out over three weeks before finals day on Saturday, September 16.
The men’s singles title went to Harry Hale in a fast-paced affair with Matt Leach, with many shots fast and low over the net and some excellent rallies and volleying before the former won 6-1 6-4 to became club champion once again.
The men’s doubles saw Paul Hutchinson and Anthony Mott take on Harry Hale and Matt George.
This was an athletic match and very entertaining to watch but Paul and Anthony were well out of their comfort zone (and age range) against the talented youngsters, Harry and Matt winning 6-0 6-1.
The mixed doubles and ladies doubles finals were both postponed due to injury.
But the boys’ singles final was a closely contested match, with age finally prevailing, as 15-year-old Alex Crossman finally beat Tommy Wilkins (12) 7-6 6-2.
In the girls’ singles final, Rebecca James (13) beat Rachel James (11) 6-1 6-4 after plenty of long rallies and a well maintained standard of skilful play.
On Sunday, September 17, the U10s Tournament was played as a round robin with six entrants.
It was the first taste of competition for some and an enjoyable event, with the eventual winner Toby Smith.
