IT was an unforgettable day at Twickenham for Drybrook under-11s on Saturday, but picking out a favourite moment was impossible.
There were so many highlights to choose from: forming a guard of honour for England and Argentina as they came onto the pitch, playing in front of a huge crowd, meeting former England and British Lion winger Ugo Moyne, getting autographs and photos with England players and seats in the stand to watch the main event.
Drybrook were selected for the honour, along with Colerne Panthers from Dorset, for pledging to the Rugby Football Union’s Old Mutual Wealth Kids First programme.
The 15 players received their new kit, sponsored by Lydbrook Valley Garage, while they were on the coach making their way to Twickenham.
There was a chance to practise the guard of honour in the changing rooms before the games against Colerne which were played in five-minute sessions on two playing areas in front of the east stand.
Chairman of Drybrook’s mini and junior section, Jason Roberts, said: “The games were quick and fast with some wonderful play by both teams who seemed undeterred by where they were playing.”
When they returned to the changing room for one final run-through of the guard of honour, there was a surprise visit from Ugo Moyne who chatted to the team about their experience.
Despite the huge occasion, the youngsters showed no nervousness as they lined up in the tunnel in front of a capacity crowd.
They led out the teams and there was a minute’s silence for Armistice Day before the youngsters headed for their seats to watch the game.
Mr Roberts said: “With all the players seated watching the game, you could sense they were still in awe of what they had just done.
“When asked what was the best bit of the day, the answer from all the players was: ‘everything!’
“What an experience these players had and thanks must go to all the coaches and committees at Drybrook and Tim Holmes at the RFU who arranged and made possible a day that all those involved will never forget.
