National Three South

Lydney 30-10 Exmouth

-----------

LYDNEY overturned a 0-10 half-time deficit against fellow National Three South contenders and registered their fourth league win on the trot in convincing fashion.

Kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes because of traffic on the trip from Devon but it did not affect the visitors who raced into an 0-10 lead after just 11 minutes thanks to a converted try and a penalty.

Severnsiders’ fly-half Tony Wicks and opposite number George Meadows both saw yellow after a 25th minute scuffle – the card a blot on an otherwise outstanding performance by the Lydney man.

Lydney showed intent from the whistle with the Severnsiders gathering from a 10-metre line-out after Wicks had sent the ball deep into the Exmouth 22, the result of a penalty from the restart.

Although initially well -defended, a Lydney arm connected with the ball in-goal to claim the five points which were then added to by Wicks.

Within six minutes the home side had doubled its tally after Wicks declined the penalty kick, opting for the five-metre line-out.

Again, good defending halted the catch-and-drive but number eight Chris Rovery peeled off the back of the rolling maul and Wicks again added the extra points with a great kick.

Wicks added another two penalties to extend the lead to 10 points by the 70th minute.

With a minute left there was another three points and an Exmouth player in the bin – and that wasn’t the end of the scoring.

Two minutes into added time Wicks hacked forward from midway with wing Kingsley Bower gathering, before passing back to the fly-half who went over for the try.

Wicks added the conversion to give him a points haul of 20 points for the afternoon.
