TWELVE teams of primary school-aged footballers fought it out in a long-running six-a-side competition.

Monmouth’s Overmonnow Primary clinched the overall Grange Invitation tournament title for only the second time in the event’s 22-year-history, adding to their 2002 triumph by defeating Newport’s Pentrepoeth Primary A 4-1 in the final.

The tournament, hosted by Monmouth School for Boys’ prep, also saw Kymin View, Monmouth, capture the Plate for the second time after a 5-0 win against Cross Ash.

The hosts clinched two trophies, with the A team winning the Shield after a 4-1 victory over Pentrepoeth Primary B, and the C team holding their nerve after a 1-1 draw with Overmonnow B to take the Bowl in an exciting penalty shoot-out.

The tournament, which was founded in 1997 by Paul Morris and took place on the new pitches at Monmouth School for Boys’ Sports Club, also included Osbaston Church in Wales School who trumphed in the main competition last year.

Monmouth School Boys’ Prep headteacher Neil Shaw, who presented the medals and trophies, said he was very impressed with the high standard of football throughout and the outstanding levels of good behaviour and teamwork.

He thanked organisers Paul Morris and Kevin Shepherd, referees, teachers, coaches and parents for their support and the Friends of The Grange School, who provided hot drinks on a cold but enjoyable afternoon.
