A TRIO of young runners sped to East Wales titles at the National Indoor Athletic Centre in Cardiff.
Monmouth schoolboys Josh Jones and Harry Dawes shone in the 1,500m events at the Welsh Athletics Junior Open, while the latter’s sister Antonia took regional gold, two silvers and a bronze respectively.
Monmouth School for Boys’ pupil Josh triumphed in the U15 boys’ section while prep school student Harry, who competed a year early, took gold in the U13 event.
It has been a memorable few months for Harry who was crowned East Wales U11 boys’ cross-country champion at Brecon in November.
Monmouth School for Girls’ pupil Antonia enjoyed a barnstorming first day at the NIAC, racing to the U15 300m title and clinching silver in the high jump.
And on day two, she added silver in the U15 60m hurdles and bronze in the 800m.
All three athletes represented Newport Harriers at the Welsh Athletics Junior Open event, which incorporated the South Wales, East Wales and South West England Championships.
Josh was crowned East Wales champion after placing third overall in the country in the U15 event, crossing the line in 5min 1.68secs.
Harry was fourth overall in his race, clocking 5min 26.60secs, and won the East Wales title by beating Brecon’s Arthur Bell by 13 seconds.
Antonia smashed her 60m personal best in the hurdles, but missed out on a gold medal in the East Wales standings by just one hundredth of a second.
